The Ohms Not Bombs Midnite star gig rocked on
Saturday 24th August, $ 700 was raised for the Aboriginal Tent
Embassy in Canberra and the low production costs were covered. A
big thanx to all the D.J's and live acts all played for
free, techno, breaks and hardcore downstairs and reggae and
loungadelic upstairs in the magestic palace of kitch, The Midnite
Star. Its been sqautted successfully for six months now and hosts
gigs every weekend making the abandoned space available for many
memorable gigs.
The venue looks surreal and magical, the lighting was amazing
thanx to the Elixer crew especially upstairs withs its high chapel
like ceilings.
Downstairs kicked off with "dafemelei" a Maori Roots reggae
artist singing over his own tunes, then a surprise appearence from
"Chin Bindi" who came especially up from Melbourne to be involved
in the nights alchemy.Next up a live set from Organarchy with
special guests 'Jester'mixing it up with "Skymob' on didge.D.J
Daturaj then mashed it up followed by System Corrupts
Toecutter.F.E.M.A and Raptor then took it through to the
morning.Upstairs the predominantly Reggae zone seemed to slowly
grab the crowd from downstairs,Gonzo,Ali Omar and the excentric
Jamaican D.J/M.C Ivojah pumped the basslines allnite, with M.C Izzys
chats and Monkey Marks tunes filtering through the mix.
We had a few hassles with a local gang that have been
terrorising the place.A few weeks ago some kids ran through a
smashed the venue up. A big mob turned up on the night. We
confronted them on the last time things got smashed up. They denied
it, we let them in and made then promise to be peacefull and they
behaved but a few stole some gear, c.ds and a vison mixer, which
turned up under a hedge in the carpark strangely. A few of us
talked some sense into them but some are hard cases. The continued
success of the space hinges on somehow getting through to these
kids and overridding their territorial bravado that comes with the
gang mentality.
You'll be talking to them and they seem onside, turn your back
and they throw a bottle.
Anyway we got a good crowd about 250, smaller than expected, the
party went solidly through the night with a great vibe and we had
not one cop come near the place.thanks to all that attended, spread
the word on the next instalment for the Canberra Tent Embassy
entiltled "Living Dream' to be confirmed maybe the last weekend in
September. If anyone wants to donate to the Tent Embassy or organize
a fundraiser you can deposit cash in the following account
